AUGUST 2008 INCIDENTS

Call # 146   08-31-08

At 18:22 on Sunday, August 31, 264 Truck along with Station 149, 260 Truck, 191 Engine 1, and 102 RIT were dispatched for a possible residential structure fire in the area of Cherry Street and Sycamore Street in the Borough of Etna. (149's District).  Caller from Ohio reported smoke coming out of the top of a roof, unknown on exact location.  149 Chief went into the scene to investigate.  Etna PD arrived on scene and was unable to find anything.  149 Chief requested all units come in non-emergency except for 149 units.  After further investigation, nothing was found and all units were returned in service at 18:30.


Call # 145   08-31-08

At 15:11 on Sunday, August 31, 264 Truck along with Station 261 and 247 Engine 1 were dispatched for a residential fire alarm activation at 2513 Pinewood Lane in Shaler Township. (261's District).  The resident reported every smoke alarm in the house was going off and has already made sure there was no fire and that the batteries were changed.  He was requesting that someone come and assist him in getting them shut off.  261 Chief arrived on scene and reported a 2-story residential structure with nothing showing.  He requested all units disregard with the exception of 247 Engine 1.  264 Truck went back into service at 15:23.


Call # 144   08-31-08

At 09:27 on Sunday, August 31, Station 264 along with Stations 262, 263, and 174 were dispatched for a possible commercial structure fire at 1050 Saxonburg Boulevard in Shaler Township. (262's District).  Caller reported smoke coming from the roof.  At 09:33, Shaler PD arrived on scene and reported smoke showing from the roof.  262 Chief also arrived on scene and reported that smoke was showing.  After further investigation, 262 Chief reported that it was only steam, impressive steam, and that all units could return in service.  Station 264 was back in service at 09:38.


Call # 143   08-29-08

At 20:20 on Friday, August 29, Station 264 along with Station 149 were dispatched for a odor of gasoline outside in the area of Wilson Street and Maple Alley in the Borough of Etna. (149's District).  Caller reported a red blazer parked in the alley between Wilson and Vilsack and stated that it smells like gasoline and believed it was leaking.  149 Chief acknowledged the call and requested 264 go back into service and one unit from 149 would go in non-emergency to investigate.  Station 264 went back into service at 20:23.


Call # 142   08-28-08

At 19:50 on Thursday, August 28, 264 Truck along with Station 261, and 164 Engine 1 were dispatched for a commercial fire alarm activation at 506 DeHaven Court in Shaler Township. (261's District).  Caller in the building reported an audible alarm in her apartment and thinks that it may be the fire alarm and was attempting to get everyone outside.  261 Chief went to the scene and established DeHaven Court command.  Shaler PD arrived on scene and reported that they believed it was a malfunctioning alarm.  All units were downgrades to a non-emergency response per 261 Chief.  After a brief investigation, it was concluded that it was a faulty detector and all units were returned in service at 20:02.


Call # 141   08-27-08

At 16:46 on Wednesday, August 27, 264 Truck along with Stations 164, 165, and 261 were dispatched for a possible residential structure fire at 2906 Harts Run Road in Hampton Township. (164's District).  A passer-by reported no address, only that 1/3 mile up from Route 8, on the right side, there was smoke coming from the left right corner.  Hampton PD arrived in the area and reported nothing showing.  Just a moment later, the reported smoke showing from 2906 Harts Run Road.  They then updated that it was just a charcoal grill in the backyard and that all units could disregard.  All units went back into service at 16:52.


Call # 140   08-25-08

At 20:41 on Monday, August 25, Station 264 was dispatched for a reported illegal fire at 414 Louann Street in Shaler Township. (264's District).  264 Engine and Squad responded from the training center.  264 Engine reported that it was a recreational fire and that there was no problem at the residence.  All 264 units went back in service at 20:47.


Call # 139   08-25-08

At 16:51 on Monday, August 25, 264 Engine along with Station 261 were dispatched for a CO alarm activation with ill effects at 301 Elfinwild Lane in Shaler Township. (261's District).  Two residents reporting to have sore throats and eye irritation.  Units arrived on scene and investigated.  Units were downgraded and switched to a fireground at 17:01.  All units were back in service at 17:06.


Call # 138   08-25-08

At 16:20 on Monday, August 25, 264 Truck along with Station 149, 260 Truck, 191 Engine 1, and 102 RIT were dispatched reported residential structure fire at 34 Freeport Street in the Borough of Etna. (149's District).  Caller reported seeing smoke on the second floor of the residence.  149 Assistant arrived on scene and had command.  He reported nothing showing and for units to respond non-emergency.  All units were then ordered to stand-by at Bridge Street and Freeport Street.  After an investigation and search of the residence, nothing was found and all units went back into service at 16:36.


Call # 137   08-25-08

At 14:25 on Monday, August 25, Station 264 along with Stations 261, 188, and 247 were dispatched on a mutual-aid fill assignment for a reported hazmat chemical spill at 2224 Walters Road in Hampton Township. (164's District).  Stations 164 and 165 were on another call at the time.  A 41 year old male inhaled chemical mist from laundry cleaner and now was complaining of chest pain and burning in his throat.  The cleaner was reported to be on the floor.  264 Engine responded and stood by a hydrant.  All units were returned in service at 14:44.


Call # 136   08-23-08

At 12:52 on Saturday, August 23, Station 264 along with 261 Engine 1 were dispatched for a commercial fire alarm activation at 823 Mount Royal Boulevard, the Pinemont Apartments, in Shaler Township. (264's District).  Caller reported that the smoke alarm was going off and that he was feeling dizzy.  He was advised to evacuate the residence.  262 Truck was added to the assignment later.  After an investigation, 264 Assistant reported that the fire alarm was set off by the smoke detector that was being used as a coaster and that there was no problem.  All units went back into service at 13:03.


Call # 135   08-23-08

At 01:24 on Saturday, August 23, Station 264 along with Station 149 were dispatched for reported mulch smoking next to the residence at 58 Wilson Street in the Borough of Etna. (149's District).  149 Assistant arrived on scene and reported that there was a small amount of mulch burning and that 264 could go back in service and 149 Engine could come in non-emergency.  Station 264 returned back into service at 01:29.


Call # 134   08-17-08

At 22:33 on Sunday, August 17, Station 264, 261 Rescue 3, 149 Rescue 1, and 325 Fire Police were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident with unknown injuries in the area of Shaler EMS, 339 Wetzel Road, in Shaler Township. (264's District).  The original report was a one vehicle accident with the vehicle in the middle of the road.  Shaler PD arrived on scene and reported that the operator of the vehicle had fled the scene and that there was no need for the fire department.  All units went back into service at 22:36.


Call # 133   08-17-08

At 11:59 on Sunday, August 17, 264 Engine along with Station 260, 149 Engine 1, and 102 RIT were dispatched for a possible residential structure fire at 100 Hill Street in Shaler Township. (260's District).  Caller reported that there was smoke in the apartment, unknown source, and was advised to evacuate.  At 12:02, Shaler PD arrived on scene and reported no visible fire but there is a smell of smoke inside.  260 Captain arrived on scene and assumed command.  He requested 260 Truck and 264 Engine continue in to the scene and all other units could disregard.  264 Engine stood by the hydrant in the area.  260 Captain reported that there was a minor fire in the doorway, that they removed part of the door, and that there was no extension to the rest of the house.  All 260 and 264 units went back in service at 12:14.


Call # 132   08-12-08

At 10:04 on Tuesday, August 12, Station 264 was added to the assignment for a reported vehicle into a house with a gas line sheared outside at 12 South Spring Street in the Borough of Etna. (149's District).  264 Truck was out of service at the time and therefore the station was not dispatched initially.  The initial assignment was dispatched at 10:00 and consisted of Station 149, 260 Engine 1, 191 Truck, and 102 RIT.  At 10:04, Etna PD arrived on scene and reported that the vehicle was not into the structure and that there were no injuries and that they needed Equitable Gas Company to respond.  AT 10:07, Shaler Police Officer 2147 stopped some Equitable Gas workers at the Citgo gas station on Mount Royal Boulevard and "dispatched" them to the scene in Etna.  The Equitable Gas workers arrived on scene at 10:10.  264 Engine stood by at a hydrant.  After a short time on scene, 149 Assistant, who had command, returned all units.  264 Engine returned in service at 10:34. 


Call # 131   08-11-08

At 15:21 on Monday, August 11, 264 Engine along with Station 260, 149 Engine 1, and 102 RIT were dispatched for a reported commercial structure fire at 11 James Street in Shaler Township. (260's District).  Caller reported heavy black smoke coming from the roof of an apartment complex and that she was attempting to evacuate the building.  At 15:29, 149 Rescue 1 arrived on scene and reported a two and a half story duplex with smoke coming from the roof.  149 Chief assumed command and began stretching a line.  264 Engine was the next unit into the scene and hit the hydrant Seavy and Kristler Streets.  260 Truck was ordered to stage on side A and ladder the roof.  264 Engine began laying out from the hydrant.  149 interior reported fire in the walls and was going to open them up.  They also reported smoke from the eves on both sides.  The interior attack team also requested positive pressure ventilation to be started in the doorway.  At 15:34, the interior team reported that the fire was knocked down in the walls and that they were checking for extension.  That investigation proved that the fire did extend to side B exposure.  At 15:35, Shaler PD requested Shaler Fire Police 325 be dispatched to block off Seavy Road and High Street and Seavy Road and Mount Vernon Drive.  At 15:38, interior crew reported that there was also extension into the floor below and that they were extinguishing it.  149 Command requested that the utilities be notified and fireground channel 4 was issued for operations.  A short time later, 149 command reported that they were holding 149 and 260 units and that 264 and 102 units were going to return in service.  264 Engine returned in service at 15:56.


Call # 130   08-07-08

At 14:35 on Thursday, August 7, Station 264 was added to the assignment for a commercial structure fire at the corner of Poplar Street and Bridge Street in the Borough of Etna. (149's District).  264 Truck was out of service at the time and therefore the station was not dispatched initially.  The initial assignment was dispatched at 14:31 and consisted of Station 149, 260 Engine 1, 265 Truck, and 102 RIT.  149 Chief requested that Station 264 be added to the assignment.  Many callers reported seeing heavy black smoke coming from the building and many callers driving on Route 28 could see flames inside the building.  Etna PD arrived on scene and confirmed heavy black smoke all in the area.  149 Chief arrived on scene and assumed command.  Units were updated that a construction crew had started a fire and it appears that they have it contained.  149 Command requested 149 units come in at an emergency rate and all other units come in non-emergency.  At 14:43, 149 Command reported that there was an insulation fire in the building and that the construction workers had extinguished the fire.  There was still light smoke in the area and he requested that the second engine in stand-by the hydrant.  102 RIT toke the hydrant.  149 Command then reported that 149 Rescue and 265 Truck were going to continue their investigation and that all other units could disregard.  All 264 units went back into service at 14:47.    


Call # 129   08-06-08

At 17:04 on Wednesday, August 6, Station 264 was requested to assist at the scene of a residential structure fire at 27 Ganster Street in the Borough of Etna. (149's District).  Initial units were dispatched at 16:33 and they were Station 149, 260 Engine 1, 265 Truck, and 102 RIT.  264 Truck was out of service at the time and therefore the station was not dispatched initially.  There were multiple calls for flames shooting through the windows of the duplex.  Etna PD Officer 2602 arrived on scene and confirmed a working house fire and was going to check for occupants.  The house was fully involved and 2602 was not able to gain access to check for occupants.  149 Assistant arrived on scene and reported a two story wood framed residential structure with a fully involved first floor.  He also assumed command.  At 16:45, 149 Command reported that good progress was being made.  149 Command requested that the Allegheny County Fire Marshall be dispatched to the scene.  A short time later, units began forcible entry to 25 Ganster Street, which was the second half of the duplex.  Interior crew requested a second crew inside to open the ceiling and walls.  Duquesne Light and Equitable Gas were both notified as well.  At 17:04, interior attack team reported that the fire was out in the attic and that no individuals were found.  AT 17:04, Station 264 was dispatched for additional manpower to the scene and Station 191 was dispatched to stand-by at their station.  At 17:10, all units switched to a fireground channel.  At 17:30, 149 Command reported that the fire was out, the fire marshall was investigating, and that crews were standing by at the time.  All 264 units cleared the scene and went back into service at 18:07.


Call # 128   08-04-08

At 13:43 on Monday, August 4, Station 264 along with 149 Rescue 1, 261 Rescue 3, and 325 Fire Police were dispatched for a reported motor vehicle accident with unknown injuries at the intersection of Kenneth Drive and Mount Royal Boulevard in Shaler Township. (264's District).  Third party call from a daughter who's elderly mother was involved in the accident.  She said that it was a two vehicle accident and that her mother was shaken up.  264 Chief and 261 Chief were both enroute when Shaler PD arrived on scene and reported that there was no need for fire or EMS and that there were no injuries.  All fire and EMS units went back in service at 13:47.
