APRIL 2008 INCIDENTS

Call # 76   04-30-08

At 23:02 on Wednesday April 30, Station 264 along with Stations 260, 149, and 102 RIT were dispatched to 27 James Street in Shaler Township (Cherry City 260's District) for a strong odor of natural gas inside of a residential structure.  This was across the street from the house that had exploded earlier in the day.  Units arrived on scene to report a strong odor of natural gas in the structure and the investigation began.  After a short period of time,  the interior crew reported that it was coming from a leaking stove.  Gas was shut off to the stove and after a period of ventilation, the smell had dissipated.  All units were then returned back into service by 260 Chief.


Call # 75   04-30-08

Around 11:30 on Wednesday April 30, Station 264 along with Stations 260, 149, and 102 RIT were alerted for a house explosion at 30 James Street in Shaler Township.  (Cherry City 260's District)  All units were originally dispatched for a residential structure fire.  When units arrived on scene, there was a strong odor of natural gas in the area.  There was a small fire on the back porch or the residence, but that was quickly extinguished.  Equitable Gas was called in to investigate.  They, along with the fire department, checked other houses in the area.  The Allegheny County Fire Marshal was also called in.  The house had been vacant for 1-2 months.  All units were on scene for about 6 hours before being able to clear the scene at around 17:30.  The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

Call # 74   04-29-08

At 21:33 on Tuesday April 29, 264 Truck along with Station 149, 260 Truck, 191 Truck, and 102 RIT were alerted for a report of something burning inside of a commercial structure at 409 Butler Street in the Borough of Etna.  PD arrived on scene and reported it to possible electrical fire and that it might possibly be next door at 411 Butler Street.  260 Truck was on the road immediately followed by 264 Truck, Engine, and Squad.  260 Chief assumed command and reported a 2-story commercial structure with nothing showing from the exterior.  149 Assistant took command immediately after that.  He sent 260 Truck crew and 264 Truck crew in to investigate.  149 Fire Police were dispatched to assist with traffic control on Butler Street.  The interior crews reported nothing inside.  After about 20 minutes, crews switched to a fireground.  After a little bit of extra time investigating, 149 Command reported that it was just a Hot Poker Machine and all units were returned in service at 22:05.

Call # 73   04-26-08

At the same time as 264 units were being disregarded from the accident at the Intermediate School, Station 264 was dispatched for a containment detail at the Sunoco Gas Station at 1020 Mount Royal Blvd.  A vehicle had drove off with the hose still in his tank and the hose was pulled off of the pump.  No gas was spilled, however, and all 264 units were put back into service at 23:37. 


Call # 72   04-26-08

At 23:20 on Saturday April 26, Station 264 and 261 Rescue were dispatched to an accident with unknown injuries in front of the Shaler Area Intermediate School at 1800 Mount Royal Blvd.  PD on the scene reported a minor accident and no need for the fire department.  All units were put back in service.


Call #  71   04-26-08

At 19:06 on Saturday April 26, Station 264 was dispatched to reported hot wires down at 687 Little Pine Creek Road.  Duquesne Light was notified and Shaler Fire Police 325 were alerted to block Little Pine Creek Road at West Pennview and at Marzolf Road Ext.  All 264 Units were clear at 19:35. 


Call # 70   04-21-08

At 17:00 on Monday April 21,  Station 264 and 261 Rescue were dispatched to an accident with injuries at the intersection on Mount Royal Blvd. and Wetzel Road.  PD arrived on the scene and reported no injuries and no hazards and requested that the fire department disregard.  264 Assistant returned all units at 17:04.


Call # 69   04-18-08

Around 17:30 on Friday April 18,  Station 264 along with 164, 165, and 261 were dispatched to a possible residential structure fire on Timberlane Drive in Hampton Township.  264 Truck and Engine quickly had full crews and began their response.  164 Chief arrived on scene and reported there was no structure fire however there was a large brush fire behind the residence.  264 Truck was requested to stand-by at station 164 and 264 Engine responded into the scene.  All units were returned in service within a half hour.


Call # 68   04-15-08

At 09:27 on Tuesday April 15,  Station 264 was dispatched with 261 and 164 to a reported vehicle accident with entrapment in front of 1604 Butler Plank Road.  A US Postal Service truck was on its side and another vehicle was also involved.  PD arrived on the scene and reported this to be on Kleber Road and that there was no entrapment and no need for the fire department.  All units were returned back in service at 09:34.


Call # 67   04-11-08

At 11:52 on Friday April 11,  Stations 264 and 261 were dispatched for a Commercial Fire Alarm Activation at the Shaler Oaks Apartments at 1122 Mount Royal Blvd.  PD arrived on scene with nothing showing and began checking the building with the maintenance crew.  Units were ordered to respond in non-emergency.  Units checked a crawl space which was the point of activation and no problem was found.  The system was reset and 264 Chief returned all units at 12:18.


Call # 66   04-08-08

At 10:16 on Tuesday April 8,  Stations 264 and 261 were dispatched for a Commercial Fire Alarm Activation at Jeffrey Elementary School on Wetzel Road.  PD arrived on scene and reported the school was having a fire drill and there was no problem.  264 Assistant proceeded in to verify and disregarded all other units.  The false alarm was confirmed and everyone was back in service at 10:21.
